Krystal Hart

Krystal Hart’s artwork is an amalgamation of regional elements such as soil, minerals, metals, and pigments mixed with man-made materials that serve to explore the human condition. A Greensboro native, Hart’s work reveals the layering of culture and tradition, loss and hope. Interwoven with both personal life experiences and the stories of others, she explores the dichotomy of our delicate existence.

Hart’s new series is based on the translation of womens’ stories derived from audio recordings, transforming words into layered physical objects. The resilience of these women is combined with the delicate, translucent nature of her process and the influence of traditional Japanese Nihonga painting techniques to create abstract patchwork compositions. Hart credits the evolution of her work to a car accident in 2010. Her experience with the healthcare system altered her view of the materials she often worked with. Since then she has focused on using healthier, non-toxic pigments that are found in the earth. During her travels she researches and sources natural materials, ultimately integrating them into her work.
