GBA/Guilty By Association presents Jahlil Nzinga's solo exhibition Fast Freedom on May 16th at their HQ (197 Bond Street, Brooklyn). Seven large paintings depicting luxury cars, sports figures, and pop culture references are paired with a series of new 'single object' paintings made especially for his NYC debut.
Hailing from East Bay, Berkeley, Jahlil Nzinga explored various creative pathways from a young age. He excelled at extreme sports, theater, and music, but ultimately found his passion in visual arts. Nzinga describes his past endeavors as “flirting with a creative calling” until painting “became the true love he would pursue for life.” A self-taught painter, he is shaped by a wide range of experiences from everyday life to studying the works of artists such as Philip Guston and George Condo. He is also influenced by travel, having embarked on two world tours. Nzinga creates artwork showcasing lavish cars and fashion using vibrant colors, bold text, and irregular forms. This opulence uncovers a nuanced Black narrative, focused on excellence and positivity.
