Extended Family

Extended Family is a showcase series presented by GBA/Guilty By Association for their neighbor Ace Hotel Brooklyn gallery from January-March 2023. Tapping into Ace Hotel Brooklyn’s long standing support for textile arts, GBA features three artists whose fiber practices blur the lines of art, design and fashion.

For February, Camella Ehlke returns after her GBA debut in March 2022 of ‘crazy chairs.’ She expands upon her practice with a series Best Friends where pairs of chairs are animated by their outfits as duos, soulmates or lovers. The new collection is presented as part of a dining room mise-en-scene at Ace Hotel Brooklyn gallery.

In January, GBA’s Extended Family launched with sculptor and milliner Lakea Shepard. Hailing from Winston-Salem North Carolina, she currently is participating in a year-long artist residency at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Her intricate masks draw from traditional African techniques like weaving, beading, and basketry, resulting in mythical objects of protection that double as emblems of Blackness.

The second GBA collection of the DuVernay Collective Swamp Party debuts in March with a premiere of their largest work to date, a wall sized beaded tapestry titled “Swamp Party” which will be hung at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn gallery. The work depicts fauna, flora and Southern creatures who co-habitat and revel together in the swamp land of Louisiana. Later that month, GBA will host a collection of work by an extended family of suit makers organized by Charles DuVernay.
