One of GBA’s primary goals is to bring artists from regional cities to the forefront of conversations. We debut our ArtCities initiative, in collaboration with Wake the Arts at Wake Forest University (WFU). Five artists were selected to spotlight the breadth of talent that runs deep in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, North Carolina.
For the ArtCities initiative, GBA has sought out university partners in locations that may be overlooked based on their geographical location. The intention is to bring exposure to these cities while also building pipelines for cultural content creation by employing local student talent; students at WFU scouted, wrote, and photographed the artists and artworks for the online showcase, in addition to producing a short film exploring how the artists work within their community.

“Wake Forest has been an active local leader in supporting the creative economies, and Wake the Arts is thrilled to be the first to work with GBA for ArtCities. We are constantly looking for unique opportunities for our students to make connections beyond the campus,” says Jennifer Finkel, WFU’s Curator of Collections. GBA cofounder Wong summarizes, “The artworld has long focused its energy on a couple of metropolises and as culture-at-large explores models for decentralization, GBA’s clarion is amplifying artistic talent hidden in plain sight.”
