What we love
This mask addresses wisdom, specifically the lack thereof. Four pillars adorning the top represent Lakea and her three sisters, with one partially severed pillar representing her half-sister. The mask was made using traditional basketry techniques and was woven with hand-painted waxed linen thread.
This mask is from the artist’s series Poppa Said Girls Don’t Play With Guns, which explores forms of protection and infuses Southern, African-American, and African craft traditions. It is part of a diptych along with A Struggle’s Child.
