The title “$428 A Gram” references the amount that melanin is sold for per gram, addressing the complexity of skin tone through the lens of pigmentation. The mask is adorned with a plethora of rich details, such as Tiger’s Eye gemstones and artifacts alluding to restoration, love, and race.
The He Loves Me Not collection subverts the form of an iron slave mask meant to mute its victim by reimagining a tool of enslavement as an object of protection. Each mask in this series explores trauma and healing processes for Black men while highlighting a particular gemstone for its restorative properties.
