Spontaneous Combustion

Though they were unsure if Mardi Gras would happen in 2021, the DuVernays  still sewed four suits, one for Charles DuVernay and one for each of their three daughters, Sadie, Madison, and Julianne. Mardi Gras 2021 was canceled, and this work reflects that frustration. 

The jagged shapes and fiery color palette represent the DuVernays’ buildup of repressed creative energy, waiting to be unleashed at the next Mardi Gras parade.
